Fencing footwork vs. squash

Footwork in squash is not the same as footwork in fencing. All these years I've been conditioned to start my advance slowly and finish fast into a lunge. The reason behind this style of movement is simple. You want to surprise your opponent by closing the distance slowly to keep your opponent unaware and then accelerating quickly in the end to strike.

In squash, the style is totally different. The movement is about reacting to the ball's changing direction and pace. It is important to break the inertia quickly by accelerating quickly off your feet but decelerate into your hitting position.

The best drills to practice are ghosting, court sprints, side steps, stadium sprints, and crouching starts.
