First Lesson Towards Preparing for New Season
I had a very enlightening lesson today. Dominique astutely and correctly identified two problems I am having, rushing and space. The rushing comes from inconsistently watching the ball. That results in starting late sometimes, but more significantly it leads to moving too quickly to the ball. That is to say I am overrunning the position. This is the second problem. I am too close to the ball. Dominique is helping me focus on just two things, making the correct space and moving in time to the right position. To that end, I've been working on just two drills. Taking two steps to the front from the T and two steps to the back. It is far more efficient and it feels a lot easier. Dominique advised that I should lunge and land on my left foot when approaching the left front court as that is natural to me. He didn't try to correct me but instead helped me to adjust. I really liked the feel of the new movement. It required much less effort than I'm used to. In turn I get to the ball in time and hit a much better shot. I see this is the basis for better shots all around the court. For now, my homework is to ghost with the new two steps and also to practice forehand driving from the back wall with more space and stepping into the final swing.
