Mental Toughness
It sounds like a cliché by now, but my biggest struggle to play consistently high quality squash is... mental toughness. In the past I wrote about match jitters and how it creates this feeling in my stomach that paralyses me. I see the ball go by as if I'm a bystander. This is the possum and he has haunted me for years. The cardio training helped a great deal to keep the possum at bay, but now I overcompensate and I feel hyperactive. This hurts my shot selection. I'm hitting short drives instead of the high and deep ones. I'm feeling winded too from the hyperactive movements around the court. In order to play my best squash I have to find a way to keep my alertness high and response quick without becoming hyper. I have to find a way to calm down after getting worked up. I will try the breathing technique and I will also start listening to music to maintain a calm energetic level.
