What kind of errors, when do I make them, and how do I counter them. I've been paying attention to my errors lately. I make a few kinds of errors. The first is mistiming my swing. The contact point is either early or late. This is often due to lack of concentration and focus. The second kind of error is a wild swing. I swing wildly at a drive where the ball is tight to the side wall for instance and totally miss the ball or hit the ball into the open court. This error is a lot like mistiming, but it's different because it usually follows a change in tempo or pace in the rally. Whereas mistiming happens when there's no pressure or when the tempo is fairly consistent. Also this happens when I'm just a bit tired and can't keep my composure and rhythm. I feel jittery and panicky when I hit the ball. I am not still when I hit it, and my swing is shortened as if I'm punching the ball. Lastly, I simply misfires and hit the ball into the tin. This always happens when I get a loose ball after a few good rallies.
Most of these errors could be considered 'unforced'
1) mistimed (unfocused and distracted)
2) wild swing (change in pace, pressured, loss of calm)
3) misfires (choking because I want to hit a winner to end the point)
Number 2) is the only error that is 'forced', but still it is a shot that I need to have extra focus and calm to hit properly.
So what can I do about these errors. I think the first step is to see the situation that induces each type of error and recognize it when it shows up. The next step is to take my time and slow down, be extra calm in those situations and pay special attention to seeing the ball. HOLD my racquet at the ready longer and not rush the swing. This is also when I take my eyes off the ball and instead I look at the target.
